From Germany to Spain: where state racism kills twice

Black History Month at MAAYA hears the stories of Brice O, Oury Jalloh and Rita O. In their names, campaigns for justice, truth and reparations continue across borders and continents to demand answers in the face of states' failures to investigate and account for their responsibility.  

20 years ago, Oury Jalloh was killed at the hands of the German police in Dessau (Germany). 12 years ago, under the shots of border guards in Ceuta (Spain), Brice O survived, but at least 14 African men and boys were killed, and many more injured and disappeared. And over 6 years ago, Rita O's life was brutally cut short in Hohenleipisch (Germany).  

We ask: what does truth, justice and reparation mean when states refuse to acknowledge rights?

As states continue to target migrant lives with new legislations, pushing for more surveillance, more detention, more criminalization, more violence and more deaths, this discussion aims to bear witness, and to connect and strengthen ongoing and future struggles with:

Elizabeth Ngari, coordinator and activist, Women in Exile

moderated by Hanaa Hakiki, lawyer from ECCHR's Border justice program.

The conversation will be in French and English.
