Germany and France have re-introduced internal border controls since last year, against the EU’s founding principles of freedom of movement and against the rule of law itself. These measures have a veneer of legality. Yet, what should be extraordinary measures introduced in case of a serious threat and as a last resort have become routine - and represent a serious infringement of fundamental rights.

The German federal police have automatically denied entry to over 40.000 individuals since September 2024, people who are hastily and automatically turned back irrespective of their documents, protection needs or any other rights. These border controls target and cause disproportional harm to racialized people and routinely involve unlawful coercive measures, violence and detention. Still, the EU Commission has not once challenged these controls.

This press conference will explore ways to accountability with first-hand experience from a complainant, hosted by Mélissa Camara (MEP Greens/EFA), alongside Hanaa Hakiki (European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights), Laura Kuttler (Society for Civil Rights / Gesellschaft fur Freiheitsrechte), and moderated by Emmanuel Achiri (European Network Against Racism).

There will be interpretation in English, French and German.

The press conference will be held in the Daphne Caruana Galizia press conference room at the European Parliament, Strasbourg. To attend in person you will require media accreditation
