A pawn in political election campaigns or an effective contribution to the protection of workers' rights and the environment

What do the inadequate payment of truck drivers, forced labor in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, violations of workers' rights on banana plantations in Ecuador, disregard for the land rights of indigenous communities on palm oil plantations in Guatemala and suppression of trade union work and low wages in textile factories in Pakistan have in common? All of these problems occur within the supply chains of German companies. Numerous complaints to companies and the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) on the basis of the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) have thus been filed, are being discussed in the media and are beginning to have an impact.
At the same time, there is criticism: while nongovernmental organizations complain about a lack of participation by complainants, some business associations criticize the law, which has been in force since January 2023, as a superfluous "bureaucratic monster." What lessons can we learn from such experiences to date? And what do they mean for the upcoming implementation of the EU Supply Chain Directive (EU CSDDD) in Germany?

We invite you to a discussion on these topics with:

  • Lilian Tschan, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS)
  • Nasir Mansoor, Deputy Secretary General of the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF), Pakistan
  • Miriam Saage-Maaß, Legal Director, European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR)
  • Member of the German parliament (tbc)
  • Katharina Reuter, Managing Director of the German Sustainable Economy Association

Moderator: Michael Windfuhr, Deputy Director of the German Institute for Human Rights (DIMR)

Afterwards, we invite you to a reception with drinks.

With simultaneous translation in English and German.
