On March 24, 1976, Argentina’s military dictatorship seized power. Around 30,000 people disappeared in secret detention centers, hundreds of thousands were tortured or forced into exile. For decades, human rights organizations and the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo fought for truth and justice. Hundreds of military officers have been convicted, and now civilian accomplices—including transnational corporations that benefited from repression—are increasingly facing trial.

These achievements are now under threat. Under President Milei, employees of the former memorial site Ex-ESMA have been dismissed, and parts of the site have been closed. Marcela Perelman (CELS) and Wolfgang Kaleck (ECCHR) will discuss the current situation and the case of former officer Luis Kyburg, who was charged with murder in Germany.

Companies such as Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen also supported the dictatorship by persecuting independent labor organizers. Ford has already been convicted, and a former Mercedes-Benz Argentina manager is awaiting trial. Victoria Basualdo will examine corporate complicity, including Volkswagen’s efforts to confront its history in Brazil.

Claudia Zilla (SWP) will open the evening with an analysis of the economic and social consequences of Milei’s shock agenda and the international rise of the ultra-libertarian right.

The ECCHR Living Open Archive will also publish a spotlight on 24 March, shedding light on the ongoing struggle for justice of Argentine civil society and its transnational allies.

An event organized by ECCHR, supported by Brot für die Welt and Amnesty International.
