Iran in crisis. Momentum, massacres, power relations

Juristische Fakultät E25, Unter den Linden 9

Iran is at a historic tipping point: a courageous society is demanding freedom, justice and radical change, while the regime is responding with systematic violence, executions and massive repression. At the same time, regional and global power axes are shifting, determining the scope for action both internally and externally.

At a panel discussion at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin on 25 February 2026 from 6 to 7.45 p.m., three prominent voices will speak about the situation in Iran:

  • Natalie Amiri, long-time ARD correspondent, author ("Der Nahost-Komplex") and proven expert on political dynamics in Iran.
  • Navid Kermani, writer ("Sommer 24"), reporter and Orientalist who analyses the religious, cultural and historical dimensions of the region.
  • Parastou Forouhar, artist and activist whose work and biography are inextricably linked to the history of violence in the Islamic Republic.

The event will be moderated by Naika Foroutan, Professor of Integration Research and Social Policy at Humboldt-Universität. Prof. Dr Julia von Blumenthal, President of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, will give the welcome address.

The event will focus on questions of responsibility, solidarity and possible future scenarios at a moment of existential crisis. The event combines information, context and analysis – and creates a space to talk about responsibility, solidarity and political scope for action. It is organised by the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM).
