From the Streets of Tripoli to the ICC: Five Years of Struggle and Solidarity with Refugees in Libya

To mark the 5 years anniversary of Refugees in Libya, together we invite you to an afternoon of reflection on the past years of struggle, of exchange across movements challenging Europe's mobility regime, and of collective discussion about how we can build around a new opening for justice. 

That opening is the upcoming trial of Khaled El Hishri, a former official at Tripoli’s Mitiga Prison, on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes. The trial concerns one Libyan official, yet the experiences of people on the move detained at Mitiga expose a wider system of migrant containment, exploitation, and abuse across Libya and the Mediterranean, deeply entwined with European border policies and material support.

It's an opportunity to seek justice for those abused at Mitiga while bringing Libya’s wider context of the EU-backed migrant detention industry into public view. Beyond this case, it can also build pressure for accountability of EU and member state officials and push towards change in European border policy.

Founders and activists from Refugees in Libya reflect on the emergence of the movement, the last 5 years of organizing and resistance, the past campaigns and current activities. 

4:45 pm Discussion
The El Hishri case at the ICC - survivor participation and the struggle for accountability 
A discussion on the significance of the legal case, about the experiences of migrant and refugee, intersecting forms of discrimination and persecution, and what meaningful participation at The Hague means. With David Yambio (President, Refugees in Libya), Allison West (ECCHR) and an additional speaker (tbc) moderated by Hanaa Hakiki.

From Solidarity to Action - Connecting struggles and building around and beyond the El Hishri trial
Individuals and groups introduce themselves and their work before we break out into small group conversations centred around e.g. "What is needed for meaningful survivor participation?", "How to support and connect migrant-led struggles" and "Mobilizing in support of mobility in the current political and legal climate".

The conversations will be held in English.
