The Evolution of Reparations Principles into Contemporary Remedies

Reflections on the Future of Human Rights

Panel Discussion

On June 27th, human rights defenders from across the globe will gather to examine the limited judicial remedies available for victims of colonial crimes against humanity and survivors of centuries of harmful repercussions continuing to this day. Distinguished speakers will share their experiences advocating before domestic and international courts alongside groups targeted and ravaged by current and past mass atrocities.

To contextualize the philosophical and moral debates over reparations in Germany, this event will explore the evolution of the basic legal right to reparations, the barriers petitioners from countries in the Global South must overcome and new efforts by advocates and academics to “decolonize” international human rights law itself. The program will spotlight a cross-section of interventions in Namibia, Tanzania, and Germany where directly-impacted communities are calling on jurists and judges to help secure guarantees of non-repetition and victim-centered remedies in proportion to the violation of their human rights.

The event will be held in English and is an in-person event.
Please register until 22 June 2023.
