“A first step towards freedom, dignity and justice,” were the words spoken by the torture survivor Ruham Hawash at the end of the Syria trial in Koblenz. She, along with other joint plaintiffs, countless Syrian torture survivors, and activists, have long anticipated the day of 13 January 2022, where for the first time a high-ranking officer in the Syrian government was convicted of crimes against humanity. This newsletter will thus be devoted to them and our work on Syria.
