A Question of Consent: ECCHR supports HRLN’s Public Litigation on Clinical Trials
In 2009, 24,000 schoolgirls in India were vaccinated against the human papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer. Many of these girls were not given sufficient information; others were vaccinated without their consent. Our partner organization Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) filed a complaint against those responsible for the clinical trials. In August 2014 the Indian Supreme Court called on the pharmaceutical companies concerned, GlaxoSmithKline (UK) and Merck (USA), to disclose further information on the clinical trials. This decision reflected the calls made by ECCHR in an amicus brief submitted to the Court.
